Sunday 9th November was Remembrance Sunday throughout the United Kingdom. In Omagh the local branch of the Royal British Legion organised a parade from the British Legion Hall on Campsie Road to Omagh Academy where a religious service was held in the school Assembly Hall. The service was led by Rev Eleanor Hayden and the address delivered by Rev Graham Hare. After the service the parade reformed and led by Murley Silver Band, proceeded to the Cenotaph for a wreath-laying ceremony. Youth organisations from all parts of the community were well represented, proudly carrying their standards behind those of the British Legion and the Armed services.
The morning service in Omagh Methodist Church paid tribute to the fallen and those who had served. A poppy wreath was placed at the front of the church and a minute’s silence observed “lest we forget”. Following this, children left for Sunday School in the church hall; they returned at the end of the service with their own “poppy wreaths” made from coloured paper glued onto templates provided by their teachers. In all it had been a memorable service, involving and engaging all adults and children present. The pulpit display created for the occasion by Mr Reggie Alcorn was much admired.
