Smiles Foundation Visit 20.11.19

On Wednesday 20 November Omagh Bible Study Group held an open meeting to share in a presentation by the SMILES Foundation. “Smiles” is a charity which has been working in Romania since 1997.   It seeks to relieve poverty, promote education and provide hope & opportunity for many through a variety of projects which include Evangelistic Outreach, Food Distribution, Medical Support, Social Assistance, Education, Elderly care, Child Care and Housing provision.   The speaker at the meeting was Mr Kevin Hoy, the charity’s founder and CEO.   Using slides to illustrate his talk he outlined several of the projects underway Romania. These include
• family care offering primary education and after school clubs for the children and provision for the elderly
• medical care including a mobile dentistry unit.
• Support for farmers with schemes to improve crop production and animal husbandry
• Work with marginalised members of the Roma Community
• Sack of Smiles – The charity’s efforts to provide Christmas gifts for families too poor to celebrate Christmas in any meaningful way
Locally “SMILES” has support from Mrs Ethel McClelland. Ethel travelled to Romania, her luggage packed with basic everyday items we take for granted but unobtainable in rural Romania where the charity is making a huge difference in the lives of many.
